17th Century Classical Landscape Painting by Gaspard Dughet.
1613 - 75.
This classical
landscape with its artful arrangement of buildings & trees around a lake reveals an obvious debt to Nicholas Poussin,
Dughet`s brother - in - law & teacher.
The motif of buildings by a lake with a reclining figure is reminiscent
of Poussin`s, Landscape with three men, of circa 1651 in the Prado, Madrid.
This particular landscape depicts an
actual view with some artistic embellishments of Tivoli.
To the right of the composition, almost hidden amongst
the trees is the tomb of the Vestale Cossinia, extant today, near the banks of the Aniene River.
Among the classical
figures resting in the foreground may be the river god Anio.
This work is another version with only minor differences
to the foliage & to the layout of the buildings, of another work by Dughet in the collection of the Earl of Yarborough.
Dughet often painted views of Tivoli & his work is represented in many museums.
Another Dughet can
be seen locally at Ickworth House, Bury St. Edmunds.
The painting dates from circa 1650.
The frame is
an English Gilt Frame from circa 1745.
Oil on canvas 25.50 by 30 inches.
£ 23,500.
Now being offered at £ 19,500.

17th Century Crucifixion Painting
by Gabriel Metsu.
1629 - 67.
Very interesting early work by Gabriel Metsu with
his self portrait as St. John.
We believe that he has also included his wife`s portrait in the painting as
Mary Magdalen kneeling at the Cross.
These images can be compared to the two portraits in the collection of
The Speed Art Museum, Louisville, Kentucky. No. 1970.56.1 & 1970.56.2
The representation of Christ on the Cross
is extremely similar to the composition of identical size in the Kasteel Collection in Rome. ( Private Collection )
That painting is signed & dated 1653 & was exhibited in Leiden in 1966.
Another version of the same
subject is in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.
In each of these three paintings by Metsu it is
interesting to note that Christ`s body is wounded on the left side whereas most artist`s depicted the wound on the right.
It is possible that this crucifixion painting may be the painting formerly in the collection of Jan de Wale in Amsterdam
in May 1706 & subsequently sold from the home of Connilia de Wit in Amsterdam in May 1706 for 78 Florins.
We
are very grateful to the eminent art historian Christopher Wright who has personally examined the painting & confirmed
in writing that it is an important unpublished work by Gabriel Metsu.
We would also like to thank Mr. Evert Douwes
Snr. & Mr. Evert Douwes Jnr. for taking the time to examine the painting when we visited them in Amsterdam. Also for confirming
that it is an early work by Gabriel Metsu with his self portrait.

£ 16,000.
Now
